The Identity Project – What Defines You

I came across this project on Tumblr and thought it was definitely worth sharing as it shows the diversity of the queer community around us in a positive, artistic and inspiring way. The Identity Project is a photography project started by  San Francisco based portrait photographer Sarah Deragon at the beginning of 2014. “This photography project seeks to explore the labels we choose to identify with when defining our gender and sexuality.” Society is still catching up on the realisation that sex, sexuality and gender are all something a lot more complicated and diverse than the binary system we’ve been taught to constrain ourselves in and this project really shines a light on this diversity. To be eligible for the project participants must be a member of the LGBTQ community, choose 1-5 terms related to gender and sexuality to self-identify with, sign a model release and come to the Portraits To The People studio in the Outer Richmond neighborhood in San Francisco. Having said this, the project made it’s way to Portland, New York & Chicago in the second half of last year …

2014 – What a Queer Year!

A lot has happened in 2014, and a lot of progress has been made for the queer community. Let’s end the year on a high note and have a look at some of the more positive events and milestones from the last 12 months. The Queer Av! Okay so this is not exactly global or anything but I’m in the process of changing the name of this blog from The Gay Av to The Queer Av to make it more inclusive of the whole community. In other news, we are now on Instagram (@thequeerav), AND there are new and exciting projects and articles to come in 2015. Watch this space! A looooot of people came out this year in the LGBTIQ community. I’m not a fan of the whole ‘coming out ritual’ and I wish is wasn’t necessary for people to have to do. I can’t wait for the day when peeps don’t assume one’s gender and sexuality from the get go and therefore the event of coming out won’t exist. Having said this, it’s still …

Orange is the New Black – 13 Quotes That Can Be Used In Everyday Conversation

If you haven’t been living under a big ol’ queer rock lately then you’ll have heard of the new TV show Orange is the New Black. It’s a show that focuses on the story of Piper, a middle class blondie who is doing jail time for a crime she committed years ago with ex girlfriend Alex. Lots of queers…jammed into one space…crazy eyes…sexual frustration…PIE… Let’s just say It’s well worth the watch; a comedy with meaning. It even has (M)tF trans representation by someone who is trans in real life, which is rare on such a big show. Because I loved the first season so much, and am eagerly awaiting the second, I thought I’d come up with a list of OITNB quotes with examples of how they can be used in everyday conversation. Because lets face it…we all want to talk THAT talk. 1. Mr Healy’s ‘lesbian-based rooming’ talk with Piper     “Lesbian Request Denied.” Whilst you may want to use this every time you tell your girlfriend you’re “too tired”, it would be advised not …

Jodie Foster's Golden Globe Speech

Jodie Foster’s sexuality is a trending topic after her recent Golden Globe coming out speech. Her sexuality has been assumed for years, though on Sunday January 13 when accepting her Cecil B. De Mille Award at the 70th Golden Globe Awards, it was confirmed. “So while I’m here being all confessional and I guess I just have a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public, so a declaration that I’m a little nervous about,” said Foster “I’m just going to put it out there, right? Loud and proud, right? So I’m going to need your support on this. I am single. I hope that you’re not disappointed that there won’t be a big coming out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family, co workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met.” She …

Wednesday’s ‘Where Are They Now’ Post – Leisha Hailey

So here I am trying to think of interesting individuals to talk about and the name Leisha Hailey comes to mind. Anyone who is a fan of the show The L Word will know exactly who I am talking about. Leisha Hailey played Alice Pieszecki in the show, a funny,  quirky, usually loud, bisexual freelance writer, living in Los Angeles.  It is her most well known role to date with the show itself a huge success in the queer community world-wide. Not only did it contain an all female lead cast, but also an all queer identified cast. I can probably count the amount of times this has happened on one hand, which is saying something…”WATCH IT.” Since then, Hailey  has appeared in a couple of CSI episodes, played the voice of Lily on ‘American Dad’ and more memorably Emily Weaver in the 2011 movie ‘Fertile Ground‘ just to name a few. However, her acting career has for the most part been put on the back bench while she has been concentrating more on her …

Friday's Fashion Post – Bow Tie Mania!

So what’s better than a bow tie? A Superman bow tie of course! Or a Batman one for that matter. My friend recently bought me a comic bow tie and so naturally, as a new lover of this item of clothing, I jumped at my first chance to where it out. My event of choice; my local Pride Parade! There’s nothing that says Queer than a little bit of bow tie love! People seemed to loved them, and at one point a stranger even commented on how he loved the costume (my friend wearing her superman bow tie, and I wearing my Batman).  In short, they just just look so darn cute, and they are something just a little different to your average black bow tie. They were ordered online from a website called ‘Etsy’. Etsy  allows artists to be creative and market and sell their products online. So not only are you looking super fly, but you’re also helping a community of artists; a win win in my opinion. Check out the website at …
