Why You Shouldn’t Gay Yourself Down For Anybody, Including Your Potential Boss

When I was twelve-years-old I decided that I wanted a career in Journalism, the reason being of course, I wanted to meet Hilary Duff and nothing was going to stop me. This is what dreams are made of…Am I right?! This of course transformed into a desire to meet many interesting people from all over the world. Flash forward a few years to when I was 16 and my dreams were still as strong, my degree picked out and my goals set whilst those around me fumbled with what they wanted to do with their lives and what they wanted to study. I began a degree in Mass Communication majoring in Corporate Screen Production and Journalism at the beginning of 2010 (Aged 19) at Curtin University. I was shocked at first to find the degree, and indeed my future profession seemingly dominated by an array of picture perfect, feminine, stereotypically straight looking women. I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel threatened. With my much more masculine appearance and identifying in the not …

Art Speaks Louder than Words

Anna Goodson, CEO & Founder of the Anna Goodson Illustration Agency, called for illustrations from the group recently after being disturbed by sexuality based discrimination in Russia. President Vladimir Putin signed a law at the end of June, banning the distribution of “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations” to minors. With Russia hosting the Winter Olympics,  major concerns have been raised for the safety of athletes and tourists alike. “We are often asked to create images for clients but here was an opportunity for them to create something meaningful, personal and from the heart,” said Goodson. “We believe that Art Speaks Louder Than Words and we wanted to show the world that our agency and illustrators don’t support discrimination and violence of any kind, regardless of Religion, Race or Sexual Orientation.” Check out some of the amazing submissions!

Orange is the New Black – 13 Quotes That Can Be Used In Everyday Conversation

If you haven’t been living under a big ol’ queer rock lately then you’ll have heard of the new TV show Orange is the New Black. It’s a show that focuses on the story of Piper, a middle class blondie who is doing jail time for a crime she committed years ago with ex girlfriend Alex. Lots of queers…jammed into one space…crazy eyes…sexual frustration…PIE… Let’s just say It’s well worth the watch; a comedy with meaning. It even has (M)tF trans representation by someone who is trans in real life, which is rare on such a big show. Because I loved the first season so much, and am eagerly awaiting the second, I thought I’d come up with a list of OITNB quotes with examples of how they can be used in everyday conversation. Because lets face it…we all want to talk THAT talk. 1. Mr Healy’s ‘lesbian-based rooming’ talk with Piper     “Lesbian Request Denied.” Whilst you may want to use this every time you tell your girlfriend you’re “too tired”, it would be advised not …

Jodie Foster's Golden Globe Speech

Jodie Foster’s sexuality is a trending topic after her recent Golden Globe coming out speech. Her sexuality has been assumed for years, though on Sunday January 13 when accepting her Cecil B. De Mille Award at the 70th Golden Globe Awards, it was confirmed. “So while I’m here being all confessional and I guess I just have a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public, so a declaration that I’m a little nervous about,” said Foster “I’m just going to put it out there, right? Loud and proud, right? So I’m going to need your support on this. I am single. I hope that you’re not disappointed that there won’t be a big coming out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family, co workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met.” She …

Living Proud – A Perth Suicide Prevention Initiative

(As published on the Living Proud Website) By Stephanie Lane Living Proud is a new suicide prevention initiative for the LGBTI* community in Perth with a number of successful community involvement opportunities already completed for 2012. From community picnics and gender diversity forums to a large presence in this year’s Pride events, Living Proud is definitely becoming a well known name within the Perth community. Coordinated by Gay and Lesbian Community Services (GLCS), it is part of the One Life WA Suicide Prevention Strategy which has community action plans in place across the state. According to Living Proud community coordinator Tamara Bézu, the community approach the One Life Suicide Prevention Strategy has used is a useful way to look at suicide prevention. “Suicide prevention is everyone’s issue, it affects everyone in the community,” she said.  “It’s important to be able to bring people together to discuss this, and to create safe environments where people are comfortable talking about how they feel.” According to Ms Bézu, homophobia is still prevalent in society despite popular belief.  Suicide within the …

Wednesday’s ‘Where Are They Now’ Post – Leisha Hailey

So here I am trying to think of interesting individuals to talk about and the name Leisha Hailey comes to mind. Anyone who is a fan of the show The L Word will know exactly who I am talking about. Leisha Hailey played Alice Pieszecki in the show, a funny,  quirky, usually loud, bisexual freelance writer, living in Los Angeles.  It is her most well known role to date with the show itself a huge success in the queer community world-wide. Not only did it contain an all female lead cast, but also an all queer identified cast. I can probably count the amount of times this has happened on one hand, which is saying something…”WATCH IT.” Since then, Hailey  has appeared in a couple of CSI episodes, played the voice of Lily on ‘American Dad’ and more memorably Emily Weaver in the 2011 movie ‘Fertile Ground‘ just to name a few. However, her acting career has for the most part been put on the back bench while she has been concentrating more on her …

Friday's Fashion Post – Bow Tie Mania!

So what’s better than a bow tie? A Superman bow tie of course! Or a Batman one for that matter. My friend recently bought me a comic bow tie and so naturally, as a new lover of this item of clothing, I jumped at my first chance to where it out. My event of choice; my local Pride Parade! There’s nothing that says Queer than a little bit of bow tie love! People seemed to loved them, and at one point a stranger even commented on how he loved the costume (my friend wearing her superman bow tie, and I wearing my Batman).  In short, they just just look so darn cute, and they are something just a little different to your average black bow tie. They were ordered online from a website called ‘Etsy’. Etsy  allows artists to be creative and market and sell their products online. So not only are you looking super fly, but you’re also helping a community of artists; a win win in my opinion. Check out the website at …

Wednesday’s ‘Where Are They Now’ Post – Brett Barsky

Brett Barsky is an actor most well known for his role as Trevor in the 1994 short film ‘Trevor’. The film follows this young, closeted boy who dreams of nothing more than to be fabulous in a time when being ‘out and proud’ was not the reality it is today for a lot of people. If the title of this film rings a bell to you then here is probably why. The movie inspired what we now know today as the Trevor Project; a suicide prevention hotline for at risk LGBTQ youths in the United States. The creators of the film were astounded that when preparing to air the movie, there were no suicide prevention hotlines available to youths who might have been facing similar suicidal feelings as Trevor. And so, in 1998, The Trevor Project was born. Barsky has been in some productions since his break including ‘The Jurer’ (1996), Boys Life 2 (1997) and ‘Daria: Is it College Yet’ (2000). However there’s no doubt that his role as Trevor back in 1994 was …
